People Aren’t Nice

I had 4 different clients who decided to use someone else besides me for their home loan in recent weeks.  Now losing a client every now and then is a normal part of the business when you are a Mortgage Advisor, but these 4 ended up stinging a bit more than normal.

The first one – we were under contract using a unique loan product and about to order the appraisal when the client informed me they found a local lender whose costs were substantially lower than mine.   (Ouch – but I understand)

The second one – I had worked with the client for over 6 months.  I had helped her get her credit to a good spot, pre-approved her, she went under contract, and her real estate agent (who I didn’t know) very arrogantly and rudely told me “she was shopping other lenders” and instantly had my client use his lender instead of me. (Why so rude?)

The third one – I had helped since February, explained in detail how the process worked, sent them worksheets and presentations about various loan products and monthly payments,  talked with them on the phone to explain things numerous times, only to find out after they went under contact they are utilizing another lender who has a rate barely .04 less than what I was offering. (Seriously?)

And finally – a deal that was under contract with an agent I “thought” was also a friend, whom I had worked with in the past at another company prior to becoming a mortgage advisor, assumed I was too busy to re-qualify our client instead of reaching out to me and promptly went to another loan officer to get what they needed to advance the deal. (What?)

I understand this is all part of doing business as a mortgage advisor.

But these situations really hurt.

I have always tried to treat people like I want to be treated.  That is what a Real Christian Businessman is supposed to do!  I try to give people the benefit of the doubt when I don’t hear back from them right away or there are situations  that come up that seem out of the ordinary.  But as we all know too well many others do not act this way.

“Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” Luke 6:31 (NIV)

Even though these situations upset me, I am not going to let it change who I am or how I act towards others.  I will continue to learn from them, take the high road and move on!

Use my examples from the last several weeks as a reminder to treat people like we want to be treated, even if they don’t treat us back the same way.
