Yard Sale

We just got finished hosting our third annual yard sale in a row to raise money for our daughter’s high school dance team. 100% of the proceeds go straight to the team budget.  Everyone from the team, friends and strangers donate stuff for the sale.   We keep it at our house in our garage (until it is so full you can’t put anymore stuff in it lol) then the Thursday night before the sale we pull it all out, sort it and get everything ready to sell on Friday and Saturday.

We have done our share of yard sales before in our life, but never one like this and never one with this much stuff.

And this year was a little different.

The last two years the yard sale has taken place we have sponsored it at our house and yet we haven’t have that much help.  It was so exhausting for us that after last year I declared to my wife we were not going to host the sale again.  We would gladly help someone else who was hosting, but we were not going to be the ones to be responsible for the whole thing – set up, tear down, get 15 tables from somewhere for us to use, take the stuff to the donation place, etc. etc. etc.

I changed my mind a couple of weeks ago when I noticed no one was stepping up to sponsor the yard sale so we ended up hosting again (it would be our last year I told myself since Delaney was going to be a senior next year).

This year though, we had several new team members (and parents), and we ended up with LOTS and LOTS of help during set up, sale time, and clean up. Because of all the help we had it ended up being the best year yet for earnings!

How does a dance team yard sale apply to being A Real Christian Businessman?  Teamwork.  Teamwork during an event or a project at work makes all the difference in the world.  It can mean the difference between success and failure.  Between long days and nights and regular days and nights.  Between completing something and doing ok to completing something at it being the best it’s ever been.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.” Ecc 4:9 (ESV)

So the next time you have a project or event at work that needs to be done, make sure you are one of the people that is volunteering and helping others to complete the tasks. Do your part without complaining.  Be part of the team.  Contribute to the success.  It will not only be easier for everyone to get it done, it will almost assuredly be more successful.
