Drive Time

Every Christmas since before we were married we have been making the drive to central Florida to visit my wife’s parents (they aren’t snowbirds y’all they actually have worked and lived there for many many years).

Each year we go, it seems that the number of people from across the country that are headed in the same direction as we are increases.  Whether there are folks from neighboring states in the south to people from Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania and beyond, they are all over the roads during our travels and there are more and more of them each time.

The biggest thing we have noticed during this holiday drive (besides the increased number of cars on the road) is that people are being exceedingly speedy and reckless.  Even when we are driving late at night with a more limited number of vehicles on the road folks seem to want to make sure their minivan and SUV flies by us at top speed or gets as close as possible to our bumper to make sure we know they are there.

A Real Christian Businessman knows how to act in these situations – but we don’t always do what is right!  At work, when someone is aggressive in a meeting or via email/text we are to refrain from engaging with them.  On the road, When a person rides by in a very aggressive manner we have to let them go and be the one that looks like the fool rather than “give them a piece of  our mind” by tapping our brakes or honking the horn.

“You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also.” Matt 8: 38-39 (NLT)

This holiday season be on the side of someone who acts right and doesn’t do the wrong thing.  Don’t retaliate and return aggression for aggression! There are enough “crazies” on the road, and we don’t need another one (us!) added to the mix.
