Closed Off
Most of the time I work from home, but last week I went into the office for a bit. I needed to drop something off and decided to work there for a while since I was already there. Our office is not that big, it has about 10 cubical spots and about 10 actual offices. While I was there it was pretty busy though! Most of the cubicles were in use as were almost all of the offices.
The thing that I noticed right off was that for the people not utilizing a cubicle their doors were all closed, and they stayed closed most of the time. Now I understand more than anyone that if you are on a phone call with a client that you probably are better off closing the office door to speak with them so it doesn’t interrupt others and you can focus on the call.
But almost everyone I saw was not on the phone.
They were just sitting there working on their computers with the door closed.
A Real Christian Businessman knows that having a “closed door” work policy does not bode well for having any type of influence on others in the workplace. We have to be intentional after each phone call to get up, open the door, and sometimes even walk around the office – to not only stretch our legs but maybe to talk to our co-workers and see how they are doing, ask about their workday, etc.
It’s easy for us to get in a groove, put our head down in our computer and work all the time without ever coming out of our office. I know I have done this more times than I would like to admit myself.
So let’s be intentional this week and not have a “closed door” policy. It’s time to get out of our cocoon, talk to some co-workers and make a difference!
“And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” Heb 10:25 NLT
