Zoom Out

Zoom meetings!  They are so prevalent now since the pandemic began in our country.  My kids have zoom small group meetings with their youth group. Schools are using Zoom to teach.  We have had regular extended family zoom meetings, at work large and small groups have zoom meetings to transact business, and most interviews now are conducted via zoom or video conferencing.

With the proliferation of Zoom meetings and video conferencing across our nation, how is a Real Christian Businessman to act “on video”?  Do we even bother to dress up adequately or just wear a t-shirt? Do we even comb our hair?  Or do we not even allow people to see our face and just leave your “initials” visible to everyone or maybe put a cute photo of our favorite football team logo on the screen.

It is very easy to slack off and be lackadaisical when it comes to participating in a video meeting for work.  It might look cute to have a photo of our labradoodle as our image, but does this portray a businesslike character?  Being professional when it is easy NOT to be professional is a mark of a Real Christian Businessman.   We care what our appearance is because we represent a higher calling.  Most people go with what the culture says (wear your pajamas to the weekly team video call).  Yet we march to a different drum.  We are held to a higher standard.

The next Zoom meeting you have try something different.  Be presentable.  Sit up straight.  Wear business attire.  Have a smile on your face.  Pay attention during the meeting. Others are watching what we are doing… and even our actions and dress during a video call can make an impact on others more than we realize.

Let’s represent well during this age of video conferencing so that even in the small things our faith can be seen.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”  Romans 12:2a (NIV)
