Meaningless
I just finished reading and studying the book of Ecclesiastes. The book is basically a lot of wisdom written down by the wisest person that has ever lived on the earth (King Solomon). As I read it I realized the same theme comes across over and over – fear God (respect his authority and all that he created) and life is short, so live it to the fullest (aka “life is meaningless”).
Looking back over the course of the last 2.5 months, I tried to see how this applied to being a Real Christian Businessman.
Did I complain a lot? About things that were beyond my control? Not able to go out to eat, not able to work as effectively as I have been able to, not able to even go to a gym to workout or to even go out to lunch with a co-worker during the workday?
Or did I enjoy the time I had, looking at it as a once in a lifetime opportunity to spend time with my family (and for me my extended family!). To be able to shoot bb guns in the back yard with my son, to be able to ride bikes with my daughter, to be able to go for a walk with my wife every morning, to be able to do a jigsaw puzzle with three generations of family.
“Everything is meaningless” takes on a whole new meaning when we aren’t really in control of many of the circumstances.
But we ARE in control our attitude and our effort! And we still have time to make the best of the days to come not matter how we have acted in the past.
For some the pandemic lock down is easing up. For others it is still in full effect. Nevertheless, each day is a new day.
Don’t sweat it when you aren’t able to complete the tasks you “normally” would have completed at work before the pandemic. Do your best. Everyone else is probably in the same situation as you are when it comes to completing work tasks. Enjoy your work. But enjoy your life more.
Kiss your spouse. Laugh out loud. Jump on the trampoline with your kids.
Remember it is only a short time that we will be here… but a much longer time we will not (eternity)…
“So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.” Ecc 8:15 (NIV)
“The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.” Ecc 12:13 (NASB)
