Work, Work, Work

I have been working a lot lately.  There have been some projects due that have caused me to stay at work late for the past several weeks in order to get them completed.

Working late has happened many times over my career.  There was a season about a year and a half ago where I was not only working late, but also working after I got home at night, and also on the weekends.  Several years before that, I would regularly work late because that just seemed like “the thing to do”, and I neglected my wife and my family for it by not being around.

Part of my personality is I also am a “doer.”  I can’t seem to sit still for too long not doing anything as I feel I am wasting time that I could be doing something productive.

A Real Christian Businessman understands that sometimes we have to work a little more as the situation calls for.  There are times when we need to put in extra effort to make sure a project is finished.   But we also know that God has shown us there is a time that we all need to rest, so that our bodies can recover from all the work we are doing. We need to slow down, particularly at the end of each day, and relax and enjoy not only the fruits of our labor but a restful time as well. There is a reason God created the Sabbath!

“Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath. . . . On it you shall not do any work” Exod 20:9-10 (NIV)

“The Lord’s pattern prohibits both ceaseless toil and laziness, both workaholics and sluggards. Work is essential, but there is more to humanity than our labor. Like God, we work, rest, and reflect.” (from Experiencing God/Blackaby)

Let us both remember this week that there may be a time or a season that may require us to put in some extra hours, but there is also a time that we need to rest, even if it means just sitting down at the end of the day and enjoying the time with our family.

It’s how God designed us – and don’t things just work better when we use them the way they were made to be used?!?
