Seeking Praise
We all are wired in a particular way. That is just how God made us. One of the ways I am wired more than others is that I get motivated by receiving words of encouragement. It just really keeps me going, both at home and at work. A simple and specific “good job Don!” goes a long way with me.
My wife knows this because she is a great encourager for me and is always lifting me up(and God obviously knows it too – since he put her in my life!) . I am also in a good spot right now at work regarding encouragement, because my co-workers and superiors periodically recognize me when a job is done well.
Whether you are wired this way more than others or not, ultimately we all seek encouragement and praise at work. it is just human nature to want to be recognized and to receive accolades for the job that we do – its the fuel that keeps us going.
We have to be careful though as a Real Christian Businessman to understand where our true praise should be sought from.
Are we trying to close that contract with that customer because we want to get a promotion and praise from the boss or because it will bring glory to God?
Do we seek the approval of others in our work ethic- never giving up, always responding promptly, being courteous under all circumstances – because we want others to think we do our job well or because we know it will be pleasing and honoring to God?
I admit that I fall short in this area many times, as I often seek praise and approval for my work from others and don’t think as much about seeking the praise from God as first and foremost.
“For they loved human praise more than praise from God.” John 12:43 CSB
Let’s strive this week not to be focused as much on human praise as much as we are focused on seeking praise from God. We will end up being surprised how he rewards us when we act this way.
