I’m Voting For…
A good friend of mine sent this excerpt below to me recently from CS Lewis’s book The Screwtape letters.
Lewis wrote The Screwtape Letters in 1942 and it is comprised of 31 letters written by a “senior demon” named Screwtape to his nephew, Wormwood a younger and “less experienced demon”.
My dear Wormwood,
Be sure that the patient remains completely fixated on politics. Arguments, political gossip, and obsessing on the faults of people they have never met serves as an excellent distraction from advancing in personal virtue, character, and the things the patient can control. Make sure to keep the patient in a constant state of angst, frustration, and general disdain towards the rest of the human race in order to avoid any kind of charity or inner peace from further developing. Ensure that the patient continues to believe that the problem is “out there” in the “broken system” rather than recognizing there is a problem with himself.
Keep up the good work,
Uncle Screwtape
I wanted to reprint this because it was so impactful to me and also so appropriate for what is going today – even though it was written over 70 years ago.
This doesn’t have to do with who you’re going to vote for as much as it has to do with acting like a Real Christian Businessman in your workplace when it comes to politics.
We can all have an opinion as to who we are going to vote for and why, but talking so badly about someone we have not even met is not what we are supposed to do. I have caught myself doing this as well so this isn’t me pointing this out just for your sake!
Other people at our job site or office are watching and listening to us – particularly how we are speaking and responding to the current state of politics.
I’m sending a reminder today to us all to not fall into the ‘schemes of the devil’, and to remember The One who came before us and what he said in the Bible as to how we should act regarding our political leaders.
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 1 Tim 2:1-2 ESV
Let’s remain dignified and PRAY for our leaders instead of always tearing them down… And watch what results from that type of action.
.
Different kind of thinking, huh?
But then again, Jesus didn’t ever roll with the ways of the world now did he…
