Your Work is Important

There is a story that has been told many times about the job attitudes of three bricklayers:

When asked, “What are you doing?” the first bricklayer replied, “Laying brick.”  The second answered, “Making $10.50 an hour.”  And the third said, “Me? Why, I’m building the world’s greatest cathedral.”

After reading this story about the bricklayers, what attitude do you relate to regarding your work?

Are you just a bricklayer? Or are you just earning a paycheck? Or do you see your vocation as making a difference in the world?

It can be hard at times to see what we do day in and day out as making a difference in the world.

But our ATTITUDE towards what we do is what makes the difference in the end.

You could be a police officer, a stay at home mom, a warehouse supervisor, or a repair man. You could even work at the largest Christian retail & publishing organization in the world like me, and still feel that you are just “laying bricks” at times.

A Real Christian Businessman knows that his attitude towards work is what will keep him motivated and moving forward.  Our approach to our job will make the biggest difference not only to us but to those around us.

Do you feel what you do isn’t important?

Look at your job again through a different lense.  Everything we do, whether laying brick or repairing a furnace (or working at a Christian retailer!) is making a difference in the world every day.

If we can just regularly see it all in our minds.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as if working for the Lord, not for man”  Coll 3:23 (NIV)

Cathedrals are kinda fun to build, aren’t they?
