I was meeting with a good friend of mine recently, and we were talking about the consequences of our actions and how they affect us in the long run (as well as how they affect others).
It reminded me of an old saying I had heard several years ago that has stuck with me ever since.
The saying went something like this: “If you would just play it to the end of the tape in your mind, you would see what the results of your actions would really be before you actually did it.”
For those that are digital natives or are having a hard time understanding this saying, it is in reference to a VHS or cassette tape (remember those?!). It basically means you should think about your actions before you actually do them by fast forwarding to the last song on the cassette tape to hear how the album ends or by going to the end of the movie and watching from there to see what actually happens before you do it.
How relevant would it be if you did this at work?
If you did this BEFORE you take credit for the work of someone else on a project?
Or BEFORE you forget to move your eyes off of that woman that walks by you at lunch?
Or BEFORE you speak harshly to someone in a meeting and never go back to apologize for your actions?
Things would be different.
Our actions feed into reactions, and they not only affect us, but also affect those around us in ways we don’t ever think about.
As a Real Christian Businessman, I am encouraging you today to go “old school” with me and play your actions out “to the end of the tape.” Think about your actions before you move forward on them. How will it end if you act that way?
People are watching you and I closely, and although we make mistakes like everyone else, using this one tactic can change the outcome of numerous other outcomes.
Will you “play it to the end of the tape” with me this week?
“Wise people think before they act; fools don’t–and even brag about their foolishness.” Prov 13:16 NLT
