Crazy Silly

Watching the commercials at the Superbowl last weekend (yes I watch those as much as I watch the game) I realized that marketing these days is getting out of hand.

It turned into a 30 second free for all to see who could come up with the most outlandish, craziest, doesn’t-really-matter-that-it-makes-sense commercial, so that during the last 2 seconds you could see the product or logo that was being marketed, with the hopes that you will remember how crazy silly the pitch for the product was, which in turn would have you talking about that product the next day.

Well it worked.

At least on me it did.

The commercial I remember the most was the car commercial that had the dad following his daughter who was out on a date. He showed up everywhere they did because the car had a built in GPS tracker (note I refuse to list the brand of car it was so that they would not get any more publicity).

These outlandish-type commercials reminded me that the culture says crazy acting is good.

Get people to buy your product any way possible.

Don’t make sense and they will listen.

But the Bible teaches us to go a different route.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. “  Romans 12:2 ESV

For a Real Christian Businessman, we need to be reminded of how God wants us to use our discernment when faced with outlandish things.    All around us, in our business and personal lives, we see chaos, silliness, over the top presentations and “do it now” call outs.

Discernment is the Real Christian Businessman’s rudder, his way of sifting through all of the noise and coming out in the end making the right decision.

Don’t  let your rudder go unused.  Use it this week to help you sift through all of the crazy silly things you are sure to encounter.
