It Used To Happen a Lot

Back when I was working in the secular music industry I worked with what we would call some real life, bigger than big, music industry “characters”. They were interesting people to say the least.  They truly lived up to the rock n’ roll, record executive mogul-type people that you have heard and read about.

Staying a Real Christian Businessman in this arena was not always easy.  As a matter of fact, it was hard.  It was particularly hard during meetings.  The vulgar language that flew around and off the lips of many people was commonplace in this industry.  I didn’t like it, but then again I didn’t judge.  I was always respectful to others if they so chose to speak that way, even if they were not respectful to me.

There was a time though that being a Real Christian Businessman made a difference.

One particular female executive used to curse up a storm.  I mean, her language was actually more fowl than anyone else I have ever worked with (male OR female).  She used the “f” bomb in every other sentence, and took no prisoners when it came to ripping your head off if she thought you were not doing your job or had made a mistake.

I never wavered though.

I mean, I listened to her curse, but was respectful back.

I took her berating sometimes, but would always answer her calmly and with a respectful reply.

Apparently, she liked this and I didn’t even know it.

Over time, I started to notice a change in the meetings we were in together.   Whenever she started to speak, with her expletive- laden tone, and she noticed I was in the room, she would automatically start apologizing for her fowl speech.  She wasn’t being facetious when she did this, but was doing it out of respect for me.  She actually started to tone down her cursing long term whenever she was in my presence. I was amazed.

I tell you this story to encourage you today to hold strong to your faith.  Hold strong to who you are.  Hold strong to your beliefs – even if you are working somewhere or with someone who doesn’t seem to notice what you stand for or who you are.   People will notice you.  And God can change even the hardest of hearts. I know because I saw it happen.

“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”  Matt 6:10 NAS
