Accept It

Change can sometimes be hard to handle. This week for example, my workplace announced that our campus in downtown Nashville is up for sale (I say campus because our buildings encompass 14.5 acres making my company the largest landowner in downtown).  Our CEO indicated that although he would like our headquarters to remain downtown somewhere if our facility gets sold, there is a possibility that we could move to a suburb of Nashville or even out of state.

This is a change that I didn’t except nor do I want, but I understand the reasoning behind it.  We no longer utilize over 1/3 of our office space, and to continue to be good stewards of the property we have to continue to look to sell it.

Now I have several reactions I can have to this news:

I can be mad.

I can think about all of the things that this could change (like my commute, where I live, if I continue to work for this company, etc).

I can accept this change and move on.

A Real Christian Businessman knows that the right thing to do in this case is to accept it and move on.  How can I affect this change anyway?  I don’t have a direct relationship with our CEO or CFO, who are in the middle of this decision. I am one of over 1,200 people employed here, and my influence is not that great amongst our top leadership.

The change that is coming cannot be undone.  I cannot wish things were like they used to be.  Getting upset about it is a complete waste of time, I will only grow old wishing that the building will not be sold and hoping things will stay the same.

As a Real Christian Businessman, I should lead the charge with a positive attitude and outlook on what the change may bring.  I should not get caught up in the gossip trail and scuttle talk about all the different aspects of what this change could mean.  Besides, God is involved and is already thinking ahead for me on how this may affect my outcome:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

Have you experienced any change lately?  How did you react to it?

People are watching your reaction to change, whether you realize they are or not.  Think about how you will accept whatever change you are facing and let God be gloried in your response.
