Seek First

I just read a great bible study from Dr. Tony Evans this morning that reminded me of something very important – maybe one of the most important things that Jesus talks about in the Bible.  It was about seeking God first in all that we do and it comes directly from the Sermon on the Mount (the longest recorded sermon that Jesus preached by the way).

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matt 6:33 (NIV)

The reminder that hit me right in the head today was that as a Real Christian Businessman, I must seek him FIRST.  Seek his kingdom FIRST. Seek his righteousness FIRST.  And THEN all these things will be given to me.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?  “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow, is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?  So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”  Matt 6:25-32 (NIV)

I realized that almost all of the time I am leaning on my own judgment; making decisions, worrying, thinking.

Like food… (I have more than enough!). Like shelter… (My home is bigger than anything I ever thought I would live in).  Like clothes… (I have so many in my closet that my closet is bursting).

A Real Christian Businessman must seek God’s counsel FIRST in all we do!

This is easier said than done of course – at least it is for me.  My natural tendency is to worry, worry worry (I’m really good at that!).  So the big Aha for me today is that I have to make a mind set change, a paradigm shift, I have to have a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WAY OF THINKING.  It must be opposite of what I have engrained into my mind over the years.  I have to change it to now and consult HIM FIRST on what I am to do next.

I am re-committing today to do this.  I will break the worry cycle!  Seek God first in all that I do.  Will you do the same?  What results do you think we would see in our lives if we put this one simple practice into place?
